Coloured diamonds: what actually drives value
Most people learn the “four Cs” — carat, cut, clarity, colour — in the context of a white diamond, where the aim is the absence of colour. With coloured diamonds the logic inverts almost entirely, and the difference is where fortunes are made and lost.
Here is what genuinely drives value, in roughly the order it matters.
Colour is the whole game
For a fancy-coloured diamond, colour is not one factor among four — it is the factor. It is assessed on three axes:
- Hue — the actual colour: pink, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and so on. Some hues are vastly rarer than others.
- Saturation — the intensity of that colour, graded (for most hues) along a scale from Faint through Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, up to Fancy Deep. A jump of one grade can multiply the price.
- Tone — how light or dark the colour sits.
A “Fancy Vivid” pink and a “Faint” pink are, chemically, the same thing. In the market they are not remotely comparable.
Rarity by hue
Some colours are simply scarcer in nature, and the market prices that scarcity steeply:
- Red and pure green are the rarest, and command the most.
- Blue and pink are extraordinarily sought-after — the closure of the mine that produced most of the world’s pink diamonds has only sharpened that.
- Yellow and brown (“champagne”, “cognac”) are the most available, and accordingly the most affordable entry to the category.
Then the usual factors — reordered
Carat, clarity and cut still matter, but their roles shift:
- Carat — as always, larger is rarer, and in coloured stones size also tends to deepen apparent colour.
- Clarity — less punishing than with white diamonds. A slightly included stone with superb colour can far outvalue a flawless one with weak colour.
- Cut — judged less on brilliance than on how well it concentrates and shows the colour. Coloured stones are often cut in shapes (cushion, radiant) chosen to intensify hue rather than maximise sparkle.
Natural, treated, or lab-grown — the line that changes everything
This is the point at which value is made or destroyed. A colour can be natural, treated (irradiated or heated to induce or deepen it), or the stone can be laboratory-grown entirely. These can look identical to the eye and sit worlds apart in value. Only proper certification distinguishes them reliably.
Why certification and provenance decide it
For a coloured diamond of any significance, a GIA Coloured Diamond report (or equivalent) is not optional — it states the origin of colour (natural vs treated), the hue and saturation grade, and the stone’s characteristics. Alongside it, provenance — where the stone has been, and the standing of who is selling it — is what allows a serious acquisition to stand up to scrutiny afterwards.
At this level, the mistake is rarely paying too much for a known stone; it is paying a natural-stone price for a treated or lab-grown one, or buying cleanly from an unsound seller. Verification is the whole protection, and it should be settled before anything changes hands.

With coloured diamonds, colour — hue, saturation, tone — outranks everything the textbooks teach about white stones, rarity by hue sets the ceiling, and certification of how the colour arose decides whether the price is real. None of it should be taken on trust.
